Diabetic-Friendly Desserts: 7 Questions to Ask Before You Buy

"Diabetic-friendly" appears on boxes, menus and Instagram posts. It sounds reassuring, but it is a marketing phrase. It is not a medical guarantee, and it does not mean the same thing from one seller to the next. The seven questions below tell you what you are actually buying.

1. What is the sweetener?

Sugar has been replaced with something. Ask what. Stevia, erythritol, xylitol and maltitol all behave differently. Some people also find sugar alcohols hard on the stomach in larger amounts.

2. Is the sweetener blended with anything?

This is the question most buyers skip. Pure stevia has almost no effect on blood sugar, but many stevia products are blended with bulking agents such as maltodextrin or dextrose. Those can raise blood sugar. A good seller will tell you.

3. What is the flour or base?

Sugar-free does not mean carbohydrate-free. Regular flour still turns into glucose in the body. Ask what the base is made from and whether that suits the way you eat.

4. What else is inside?

Fillings, caramel, coatings, biscuit pieces and fruit all add carbohydrates. The chocolate can be sugar-free while the extras are not. Ask for the full ingredient list, and read it as described in our guide to reading a sugar-free label.

5. How big is one portion?

A sugar-free dessert still carries energy and fat, and WHO advises people at risk of type 2 diabetes to avoid sugar and saturated fat as part of a healthy diet. Ask how much one piece weighs, and start with a small one.

6. Can the seller answer questions?

A seller who knows the recipe can tell you the sweetener, the base and the extras in one message. If the answers are vague, that tells you something too.

7. What does your doctor say?

This one matters most. Every person with diabetes responds differently. Your doctor or dietitian knows your numbers and your medication, and can tell you how a dessert fits your plan, how much and when. If they suggest checking your blood sugar after trying something new, follow that advice.
